Platform Governance Design in Platform Ecosystems: Implications for Complementors’ Multihoming Decision

چکیده

Extant platform research focuses on how owners’ governance behaviors directly affect complementors. This study explicates the multilateral interdependence among different groups of producers within a ecosystem. We theorize about design may create frictions between providers and While open grants greater autonomy to providers, it also cultivates more complex ecosystem for Since complexity raises cost product customization, complementors will be less willing port an existing complement ecosystem, that is, likely multihome. The negative effect is weakened as complementor has experience with destination or when exhibits level modularity. Our analysis newly launched apps in Apple’s iOS Google’s Android smartphone ecosystems finds supportive evidence. discuss implications burgeoning literature

Merging Platform Ecosystems in Technology Acquisitions: a Governance Perspective

This paper investigates the issue of merging third-party ecosystems in corporate acquisitions to access innovative technologies and related capabilities. Extant explanations for how technology acquisitions create value are limited to the analysis of the internal capabilities and structures of the merging companies. Given the increasing importance of platforms and value co-creation with third-pa...

Design Choices for Data Governance in Platform Ecosystems: A Contingency Model

As platform ecosystems are growing by platform users’ data, the importance of data governance has been highlighted. In particular, how to share control and decision rights with platform users are regarded as significant design issues since the role of them is increasing. Platform context should be considered when designing data governance in platform ecosystems (i.e. centralized/decentralized g...

Why don't they join? Analyzing the Nature and Consequences of Complementors' Costs in Platform Ecosystems

Platforms enable third-parties to develop new software artefacts like applications and become the locus of digital innovation. Prior studies have mainly focused on the benefits that initially motivate external complementors to join an ecosystem. However, little is known about the costs that are associated with this choice and how such costs actually influence the decision to interrelate with a ...

Managing Platform Ecosystems

We examine how control over a technology platform can increase profits and innovation. By choosing how much to open and when to bundle enhancements, platform sponsors can influence choices of ecosystem partners. Platform openness invites developer participation but sacrifices direct sales. Bundling enhancements early drives developers away but bundling late delays platform growth. Ironically, d...

Evolutionary Competition in Platform Ecosystems

I competition has received scant attention in prior studies, which predominantly study interplatform competition. We develop a middle-range theory of how complementarity between input control and a platform extension’s modularization—by inducing evolution—influences its performance in a platform market. Primary and archival data spanning five years from 342 Firefox extensions show that such com...
